Cola

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cola is a bubbly soft drink with a very distinct taste. Most colas have a dark caramel color and a sweet flavor. They often use citrus oils from lemon, lime, or orange peels. You might also taste vanilla or cinnamon in the drink. Some makers add extra spices like nutmeg or coriander to stand out. These small details help each brand create its own special flavor.

Making cola involves many different ingredients to get the right mix. Many brands use sugar or corn syrup to make the drink sweet. In the United States, high-fructose corn syrup is very common. In Europe, many makers prefer using real sugar instead. Some people also use stevia or other artificial sweeteners for diet versions. To add a little zing, makers often add phosphoric acid. This acid gives the soda its sharp, bubbly feeling.

The history of cola began with the kola nut. This nut is the source of the name and provides caffeine. Around 1880, stimulating sodas using the nut became popular. In 1886, a pharmacist named John Stith Pemberton made a famous recipe. His drink was inspired by a coca wine made by Angelo Mariani. Because of local laws, Pemberton had to change his recipe. He moved away from his original French Wine Coca to create a non-alcoholic version.

Many different brands of cola exist all over the world today. Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been famous rivals since the 1890s. In Japan, people are making a new kind of "craft cola." These small batches use local fruits, herbs, and spices. Some colas are even clear instead of dark. For example, Crystal Pepsi was popular in the 1990s. In Denmark, a clear "Hippie Cola" was made in 1976 to avoid certain dyes.

While many people enjoy cola, it is important to drink it in moderation. Some studies suggest that too much cola might affect your bones. For older women, drinking a lot of caffeinated cola may lower bone density. Some nutritionists also worry about the high amount of calories in sweetened drinks. Drinking too much soda can also make it harder to sleep because of the caffeine. It is best to balance these treats with healthy foods like milk. This helps your body get important vitamins and minerals.
