He helped change how doctors perform operations. Halsted was a leader in using aseptic technique. This means keeping everything very clean to stop germs. He also helped find new ways to stop pain. These ways are called anesthetics. He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

His work helped make modern surgery much safer for everyone.

Halsted used many new steps to help his patients. He introduced the hospital chart to track vital signs. These are things like a person's pulse and temperature. He also used antiseptic methods to keep surgical areas clean. One way he did this was by using a special tent. This tent helped him practice clean surgery at Bellevue Hospital. He even performed a gallbladder operation on his mother. He did this at 2 am on a kitchen table. He removed seven gallstones and she recovered fully.

Halsted learned a lot from many different teachers. He went to Yale College and graduated in 1874. Then he went to the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He studied hard and finished in the top ten of his class. Later, he traveled to Europe to learn from great scientists. He met many famous doctors like Theodor Billroth and Ernst von Bergmann. These experts taught him new ideas about cancer. He brought these important medical ideas back to the United States.

Many big things happened during his medical career. In 1882, he performed a gallbladder surgery on his mother. In 1884, he studied how cocaine could work as an anesthetic. An anesthetic is a medicine that stops pain during a procedure. He tested this medicine on himself to ensure it was safe. This caused him to develop a serious addiction to cocaine. He later became addicted to morphine as well. He used about three grains of morphine every day.

His life shows how much one person can change science. He started the first surgical residency in North America. A residency is a special training program for new doctors. This helped doctors learn by doing real work. He also helped start the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1892. Even with his personal struggles, he remained a pioneer. His bold moves helped doctors save many lives. We still use many of his ideas in hospitals today.
