Halsted was known for being very bold. He once used his own blood to save his sister. He also used new ways to keep tools clean. This is called aseptic technique. It helps stop germs from causing sickness during surgery.

Halsted also worked with new medicines. He tested a drug called cocaine to see if it could stop pain. This is known as local anesthesia. He tested the drug on himself to make sure it was safe. Sadly, this led to a serious problem. Halsted became addicted to the drug. He later became addicted to morphine, too. Even with these struggles, he stayed a great doctor. He made the first surgical residency program in North America. This was a special way to train new doctors. His work changed how surgery is done today.
