Crawford Long was an American surgeon and pharmacist who changed medicine. He is best known for his work with anesthesia. Anesthesia is a way to help patients not feel pain during surgery. Before this, surgeries were very difficult because people felt the pain. Long wanted to use his skills to help humanity. He believed his medical work was a way to do good in the world.

Long found a way to use a liquid called sulfuric ether. He would put the ether on a towel. The patient would then breathe in the scent through the towel. This helped the patient fall into a state where they did not feel pain. He first used this method on March 30, 1842. He used it to remove a tumor from a man named James M. Venable.

Long studied hard to become a doctor. He was born in Danielsville, Georgia, on November 1, 1815. He went to the University of Georgia in Athens. Later, he studied at Transylvania College in Kentucky. He also went to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree there in 1839. He even studied under a famous surgeon named Benjamin Dudley.

After his studies, Long started a practice in Jefferson, Georgia. He used ether for many surgeries over several years. He even used it during childbirth to help mothers. However, he did not publish his results right away. He wanted to be sure his experiments were correct. In 1846, a man named William T. G. Morton gave a public demonstration of ether. This caused a big argument called the "ether controversy." Other men like Horace Wells and Charles Jackson also claimed they found it first.

Today, many people recognize Long for his discovery. In 1879, a medical group named him the official discoverer of anesthesia. His work is remembered every year on March 30. This date is called Doctors Day. There is even a statue of him in the U.S. Capitol. A county in Georgia was also named Long County to honor him. He left a lasting mark on how doctors help people today.
