Ethers are a special group of compounds in organic chemistry.

They are built around a single oxygen atom. This oxygen atom is bonded to two separate carbon atoms. These carbon parts are called organyl groups. If both sides are the same, it is a symmetrical ether. If the sides are different, it is an unsymmetrical ether. Ethers are very important in the world of living things. They act as links in carbohydrates and in lignin, which is found in wood.

How these molecules work depends on their shape. Ethers have a bent shape where the atoms connect. In a molecule called dimethyl ether, the angle is 111 degrees.

The distance between the carbon and oxygen atoms is 141 pm. The bonds can rotate quite easily. Ethers can also form very long chains called polyethers. These are polymers made of many ether links. Some polyethers even form large rings, which are called cyclic polyethers.

People have studied ethers for a long time. Pierre-François-Guillaume Boullay and his son first isolated them. This happened in the early 19th century. Many common ethers had names before scientists had formal rules. For example, diethyl ether was once called sweet oil of vitriol. Another ether called anisole got its name because it was found in aniseed.

There are many different types of ethers with unique facts. Dimethyl ether is a colorless gas used as a spray propellant. It can also be a fuel for diesel engines. Diethyl ether is a colorless liquid with a sweet smell.

It has a boiling point of 34.6 degrees Celsius. This makes it a common solvent. Tetrahydrofuran is another type that is very good at mixing with water.

Some ethers are even found in toxins made by tiny sea creatures called dinoflagellates. These toxins are called brevetoxin and ciguatoxin.

Ethers are useful but they require careful handling. If they are stored in air, they can form explosive peroxides.

This happens when they react with oxygen. Light and metals can make this reaction happen faster. Scientists must check old samples for these dangerous parts. They can use a special solution to see if peroxides are there. If the liquid turns blood red, it means peroxides are present. This is why many industries avoid using certain ethers in their work.
