Alkynes are a special group of molecules in organic chemistry.

They are made only of carbon and hydrogen atoms. What makes them unique is a triple bond. This means three bonds connect two carbon atoms together. This triple bond is very strong. It has a bond strength of 839 kJ/mol. Because of this bond, these molecules often look like long rods.

How these molecules work depends on their shape. In the simplest alkyne, the bond angles are 180 degrees. This straight shape is why they look like rods. The bond distance is also very short. For acetylene, the distance is only 118 picometers. This is much shorter than bonds in other molecules. For example, alkanes have longer bonds at 153 pm.

Scientists have studied these molecules for a long time. Ralph Raphael was a pioneer in this field. In 1955, he wrote the first book about them. He showed how useful they are as building blocks. He explained how they can be used to make other things. This helped chemists understand how to use them in many ways.

There are many different types of alkynes to know. Some have a hydrogen atom at the very end. These are called terminal alkynes. Others have carbon atoms on both sides of the triple bond. These are called internal alkynes. Acetylene is the most common alkyne. It is also called ethyne in formal naming.

We can see how alkynes work in our daily lives. Acetylene is often used as a fuel. It is used in oxyacetylene torches for welding metal. This is because it gives off a lot of heat when it burns. This process is called highly exothermic combustion. It is a very powerful way to use chemical energy.
