Hydrocarbons are special chemical compounds. They are made entirely of just two elements: carbon and hydrogen.

These compounds can look and act very differently. Some are gases, like methane or propane. Others are liquids, such as hexane or benzene. Some are even solids, like paraffin wax or naphthalene. They can also form polymers, which are long chains of molecules.

Because they come in so many shapes, they are very useful.

Scientists group these molecules by how their atoms connect. Saturated hydrocarbons, called alkanes, only have single bonds between carbon atoms. They are often used as fuels. Unsaturated hydrocarbons have double or triple bonds. Alkenes have one double bond, while alkynes have one triple bond.

There are also aromatic hydrocarbons, which contain at least one ring shape. Some molecules have the same formula but different shapes; these are called structural isomers. This variety allows them to do many different jobs.

We use hydrocarbons in many ways every day. The most common use is as a fuel for energy. We burn them to create heat for homes or to power cars. Burning them also helps generate electricity in power plants.

Besides fuel, they are used to make many products. We use them to create solvents and plastics like polystyrene. This happens through a process called polymerization. Even heavy tars from oil are used for roofing and pavement.

Most hydrocarbons on Earth come from natural sources. These include petroleum, natural gas, and coal. These materials formed from the decomposition of organic matter long ago.

In refineries, crude oil is processed in several stages. This creates the specific hydrocarbons we need for jet fuel or gasoline. Some hydrocarbons even come from living things. For example, certain bees use them as scents to recognize their family. Some plants also release hydrocarbons like ethylene into the air.

Understanding hydrocarbons helps us see how the world works. They connect the energy in our cars to the ancient plants of the past. They also link the chemistry of plants to the plastics we use. Even the way we heat our homes relies on these tiny molecules. By studying them, we learn how to use energy and create new materials. It is a big part of how our modern world stays running.
