Scientists group them by their parts. Saturated hydrocarbons have only single bonds. These are called alkanes. They are often used for fuel. Unsaturated hydrocarbons have double or triple bonds. We use hydrocarbons for many jobs. Burning them gives us power. It also provides heat for homes. We use them to make plastic. This happens through polymerization. This is a way to link small parts into big ones. We also get them from petroleum and coal. These come from old organic matter. Some hydrocarbons even come from living plants.
