One group is called aliphatic compounds. These can be in lines or rings. Some are open chains. These chains can be straight or branched.

These compounds can be saturated or unsaturated. Saturated means they have single bonds. They are full of hydrogen. We call these alkanes.

Unsaturated compounds have other bonds. Some have double bonds. We call these alkenes. Others have triple bonds. We call these alkyne compounds.

Some aliphatic compounds have rings. These are called cyclic compounds. They are aliphatic if they are not aromatic.

Most of these are flammable. This means they can burn. We use them as fuel. Methane is in natural gas for stoves. Butane is in lighters. We use others for jet fuel. Some help with welding tools.
