Molecules are made of atoms. A functional group is a specific part of a molecule.

These groups have special ways of acting. They cause the molecule to have certain chemical reactions. This happens even if the rest of the molecule changes. Because of this, scientists can predict how a new molecule will behave.

Functional groups also change how things mix. We often say "like dissolves like." This means groups that are similar will mix well. For example, sugar dissolves in water. This is because both have a hydroxyl group.

Some groups can also have a charge. This can turn a molecule into an ion. An ion is a part of a molecule with a charge. Other groups can make a molecule polar. This means the molecule has a pull on its parts. This pull helps the molecule dissolve in water. There are many types of groups. Some contain oxygen, some contain nitrogen, and some contain sulfur.
