Boranes

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Boranes are a special group of chemical compounds. Most of them are made of boron and hydrogen. These are often called boron hydrides. They are very interesting to scientists. This is because they bond in ways that are different from hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are the building blocks of many things in nature. Some boranes even join with hydrocarbons to form carboranes.

There are many ways these things work. Many boranes are made from a substance called diborane. Diborane is a small group of two borons and six hydrogens. This substance can react with alkenes. This specific way it works is called hydroboration. Hydroboration helps scientists create alkylboranes. Other types of boranes can be made by using chloroboranes. You can also make them using boronic esters.

Learning about boranes took a long time. Scientists had to find new ways to study them. Many boranes are volatile and pyrophoric. Volatile means they turn into gas very easily. Pyrophoric means they can catch fire on their own. A scientist named Alfred Stock invented a glass vacuum line. This tool helped people handle these tricky substances safely.

Interest in these compounds grew during World War II. People thought they could help fill weather balloons with hydrogen. They were also used to study uranium isotopes. In the United States, a team led by Schlesinger studied them. His work helped create tools for organic synthesis. His student, Herbert C. Brown, developed many of these tools. Brown won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1979.

Boranes come in many different sizes and shapes. Some are very simple, like the parent boranes. Others form large groups known as clusters. You might see tetraborane or pentaborane in a lab. There are also primary, secondary, and tertiary boranes. Tertiary boranes are often monomers, which means they stay as single units. This is different from the aluminium compounds that stay in pairs.
