Boranes

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Boranes are a unique group of chemical compounds. Most of them are boron hydrides, which means they are made of boron and hydrogen. These substances are highly important to chemists today. They exhibit structures and bonding patterns that differ strongly from hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are molecules made of carbon and hydrogen. Scientists also study carboranes, which are special hybrids of boranes and hydrocarbons.

Many boranes are created through a process called hydroboration. In this process, diborane reacts with alkenes to produce alkylboranes. Diborane is a specific type of borane with two boron atoms and six hydrogen atoms. Other methods exist to create different types of boranes. For example, scientists can use alkylation to produce alkyl and aryl boranes. This can be done using chloroboranes or boronic esters.

Boranes are organized into several distinct classes. The first class consists of binary boron hydrides. These are the parent boranes, such as the single borane (BH3) and its dimer, diborane (B2H6). Pyrolysis, which is heating a substance to high temperatures, can turn these into higher boranes. Examples include tetraborane (B4H10) and pentaborane (B5H9). These molecules are members of a larger family known as boron hydride clusters.

Another class includes primary and secondary boranes. This group contains monoalkylboranes and dialkylboranes. Most of these molecules are dimeric, meaning they exist as pairs joined by bridging hydrides. However, if they have bulky substituents, they become easier to isolate. Some useful examples include 9-BBN and thexylborane.

A third class is known as tertiary boranes. These are often the focus of much scientific work. They include trialkyl and triaryl boranes, such as trimethylboron or triphenylboron. Unlike the aluminum compounds that are similar, tertiary boranes are monomers. A monomer is a single, independent molecule. In these molecules, the BC3 cores are planar, meaning they are flat in shape.

The history of borane chemistry is full of innovation. Early researchers faced many challenges with these substances. Many boranes are volatile, meaning they evaporate easily. They are also pyrophoric, which means they can catch fire spontaneously. To handle these dangerous materials, Alfred Stock invented the glass vacuum line. This tool allowed scientists to work with diborane and its derivatives safely. The structure of diborane was not correctly predicted until 1943.

Interest in boranes increased significantly during World War II. Scientists looked at uranium borohydride for the enrichment of uranium isotopes. They also considered boranes as a source of hydrogen for inflating weather balloons. In the United States, a team led by Schlesinger studied anionic boron hydrides. His work helped create many reagents used in organic synthesis. His student, Herbert C. Brown, expanded this research greatly. Brown was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1979 for his contributions.

Today, borane-based reagents are widely used in organic synthesis. This is the process of building complex organic molecules. Because they react in specific ways, they are essential tools for chemists. The study of boranes connects to many different fields of science. It helps us understand how atoms bond in ways we do not see in common organic matter. This unique bonding makes boranes a vital part of modern chemical study.
