Boranes are a special group of things made of boron.

Most of them also have hydrogen. These things are called boron hydrides.

Some boranes are very tricky to use. They are volatile, which means they turn into gas easily. They are also pyrophoric. This means they can catch fire on their own. A scientist named Alfred Stock made a glass tool to handle them.

During World War II, people studied boranes for new uses. They could help fill up weather balloons with hydrogen. They were also used to study uranium.

Scientists use boranes to make other things in labs. This is called organic synthesis. A man named Herbert Brown studied this a lot. He made many tools using boranes. He won a Nobel Prize in 1979 for his work.

There are many kinds of boranes. Some are small, like diborane. Others form big groups called clusters. Some boranes are made by a way called hydroboration. This happens when diborane reacts with alkenes. This helps make alkylboranes.
