Borate

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Borates are a group of tiny parts called anions. These parts are made of boron and oxygen atoms. They are very important because they can form many different shapes. Some borates form simple shapes like triangles or pyramids. Others join together to make long chains or flat layers.

These shapes allow borates to do many interesting jobs in our world. They can even help seawater soak up low sounds.

How these tiny parts work depends on how they connect. Borate anions use oxygen atoms to link together. They might share one oxygen atom at a corner. They might even share two atoms along an edge. This creates larger clusters or even huge frameworks.

Some borates act like hinges when they get warm. This means they can rotate without changing their size. This special way of moving helps them handle heat.

People have studied these minerals for a long time. In 1905, two scientists named Burgess and Holt did important work. They looked at how mixing boric oxide and sodium carbonate created crystals. This helped them understand different types of borax.

Since then, we have found many different ways to make borate thin films. Scientists use tools like lasers or electron beams to grow them.

Borates are found in many real places on Earth. Large amounts of borax are found in Death Valley. From 1883 to 1889, people moved it using teams of twenty mules. In 1925, more was found in Boron, California. The Atacama Desert in Chile also has many borates.

You can even find borates in almost all fruits. They are also found in many different minerals like ulexite and colemanite.

We use borates in many items you might know. One famous use is in borosilicate glass, which is also called Pyrex. This glass is strong because it does not crack easily when heated. We also use zinc borate to help stop fires from spreading.

Some borates are used to protect wood from mold. In your own body, borates are absorbed and move through your system. They mostly stay in your bones before leaving through your urine.
