physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Borax is a white, crystalline solid that people use in many ways. It is a type of salt known as sodium borate. You might also hear it called tincal or tincar. This mineral is found in only a few places around the world. It forms in dry lake beds when seasonal lakes evaporate.

Because it is found in specific spots, it can be mined to make products. It is very useful in both homes and big factories.

There are many ways that borax works. When you mix it with water, it creates a basic solution. This happens because of a part of the mineral called a tetraborate anion. You can also change borax by heating it up. If you heat it, the water inside the mineral leaves. This can turn the solid into a powder or even a glasslike substance.

Scientists can even use it to make a rubbery slime called "flubber." This happens by linking certain molecules together using the borax.

People have been using borax for a very long time. It was first discovered in the dry lake beds of Tibet. In the 8th century AD, people traded tincal along the Silk Road. They moved it from Asia to the Arabian Peninsula. Later, in the late 19th century, a man named Francis Marion Smith helped make it famous. His company was the Pacific Coast Borax Company.

They used a special name called the 20 Mule Team Borax trademark.

This name came from how the borax was moved. Workers used teams of mules to haul the mineral out of deserts. These deserts were in California and Nevada.

Today, we find large deposits in places like Boron, California. There are also important mines at Searles Lake in California. Other deposits exist in the Atacama Desert in Chile. You can even find it in Tibet and Romania. These specific locations allow us to get enough borax for many jobs.

Borax helps with many different tasks you might know. It is used in laundry detergents to help clean clothes. It can also be a flux, which is a substance that helps metal flow. This is helpful when people solder jewelry made of gold or silver.

Some miners even use it to help extract gold from rocks. It can also be used as a pesticide to control ants and rats. Because it works slowly, ants carry it back to their nests. This helps protect the whole colony from pests.
