Sodium nitrate

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sodium nitrate is a white salt that looks like a solid. It is very soluble, which means it dissolves easily in water. People often call it Chile saltpeter to tell it apart from other salts. It is a very useful substance for many different jobs. It helps make fertilizers to help plants grow. It is also used to make fireworks and smoke bombs. Some people even use it to make fuel for solid rockets.

This salt forms in a very special way in dry places. In hot deserts, sea spray and fog can settle on the land. Over time, these materials build up into mineral deposits called caliche ore. This process happens when water moves through the soil and leaves layers behind. These layers can form rare veins of pure nitrate. Most of these natural deposits are found in Chile and Peru.

People have been finding and using this salt for a long time. The first shipment of saltpeter arrived in England from Peru around 1820 or 1825. At first, it was not very popular and was even dumped at sea. Later, mining it became a very big business. In 1859, England alone used 47,000 metric tons of it. In 1919, a scientist named Ralph Walter Graystone Wyckoff studied its crystal structure using X-rays.

In the past, almost all the world's supply came from the Atacama desert. This changed at the start of the 20th century. Two German chemists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, found a way to make it. They created a process to make ammonia from the air. This allowed factories to make synthetic saltpeter. By the 1940s, people did not need to mine as much from the earth.

Today, we see the effects of this salt in many places. You might see it in the food you eat. It is used as a preservative to keep meats and poultry fresh. It is also used in many industrial ways. For example, it can help store thermal energy for solar power. It can even be used to coat steel with a layer of magnetite.
