Bicarbonate is a very important part of chemistry. It is a tiny part of a molecule called an ion. This ion has a negative charge. The chemical formula for it is HCO3–. It is made of one carbon atom in the middle. Three oxygen atoms surround that carbon atom. A single hydrogen atom is attached to one of those oxygens.

This shape is called a trigonal planar arrangement. Bicarbonate is also what we call an amphiprotic species. This means it can act as both an acid and a base.

Our bodies use bicarbonate to stay healthy through a process called buffering. A buffer helps keep things steady. Bicarbonate works with water and carbon dioxide to manage pH. pH is a measurement of how acidic or basic a liquid is. This system protects our tissues, especially in our central nervous system. If the pH changes too much, it can be very dangerous.

In our cells, bicarbonate is made when sugars are broken down. It travels through the blood to the lungs. There, the reaction reverses and the gas is released.

People have studied this substance for a long time. An English chemist named William Hyde Wollaston named it. He coined the term "bicarbonate" in 1814. He wanted to show it was different from other salts. He called it bi-carbonate of potash to show it had a double dose of carbonic acid. This name is still used by scientists today. His work was published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

Bicarbonate is found in many places in nature. It is the main form of dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater. It is also common in most fresh waters. This makes it a key part of the carbon cycle. In the digestive system, the pancreas releases it. This happens because of a hormone called secretin. It helps neutralize the acidic food moving into the small intestine.

Doctors also measure bicarbonate in blood tests. They check it along with sodium and potassium. This helps them see if your body is in balance.

You likely have bicarbonate in your kitchen right now. The most common salt is sodium bicarbonate. Most people call this baking soda. When you heat it, it releases carbon dioxide gas. This gas creates bubbles that make bread and cookies rise.

Another kind is ammonium bicarbonate. This is used to make crackers and biscuits. Even the rain helps make bicarbonate. Rainwater with carbonic acid weathers rocks. This flow of ions is another way carbon moves around our planet.
