Sodium nitrate is a chemical compound with the formula NaNO3. It is an alkali metal nitrate salt that appears as a white, deliquescent solid. This compound is often called Chile saltpeter to distinguish it from potassium nitrate, which is known as ordinary saltpeter. In its mineral form, it can be called nitratine, nitratite, or soda niter. It serves as a vital source of the nitrate anion (NO3−) for many industrial processes.

The natural occurrence of sodium nitrate is a complex geological process. It primarily accumulates in hot, dry desert atmospheres through marine-fog precipitation and sea-spray oxidation. As these particles undergo desiccation, or drying, they settle onto the land via gravitational settling. This process often creates mineral deposits known as caliche ore. Environmental cycles like El Niño and La Niña play a major role in this formation. Extreme aridity helps the salts build up, while torrential rain allows for water solution and remobilization. This movement carries the nitrates onto slopes and into basins, where capillary action forms distinct layers. In some rare cases, this process creates veins of pure nitrate.

Historically, the mining of sodium nitrate was a massive global industry centered in South America. The largest natural accumulations are found within the Atacama desert in Chile and Peru. The first shipment of saltpeter reached England from Peru around 1820 or 1825. Interestingly, this early shipment had no buyers and was dumped into the sea to avoid customs tolls. However, the business soon became very profitable for mining companies. By 1859, England alone was consuming 47,000 metric tons of the substance. This value led many to call the resource "white gold" in Chile. The importance of these sites was so great that Chile fought the War of the Pacific from 1879 to 1884 to control the richest deposits.
