Sodium sulfate

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sodium sulfate is a white solid that belongs to a group of substances called inorganic compounds. It is a type of salt that dissolves very easily in water. This salt is important because it is used in many different ways around the world. People produce about 6 million tonnes of it every year. It can be found in nature as a mineral or made in chemical factories. Because it is so useful, it is known as a major commodity chemical product.

This substance works in many interesting ways depending on how it is used. In laundry detergents, it acts as a filler to help the powder work. When making paper, it helps create the chemicals needed for the Kraft process. In glassmaking, it acts as a fining agent to remove tiny air bubbles from molten glass. It can even store heat by changing from a solid to a liquid. This change lets it hold a lot of energy to keep homes warm.

History tells us that a chemist named Johann Rudolf Glauber discovered a form of this salt. He was a Dutch-German chemist and apothecary who lived from 1604 to 1670. In 1625, he found the salt in Austrian spring water. He called it Glauber's salt, which means miraculous salt. He gave it this name because it was used as medicine. People used the crystals as a laxative until the 1900s.

There are different forms of sodium sulfate with specific names and uses. One form is called anhydrous sodium sulfate, which is also known as the mineral thénardite. Another form is the decahydrate, which is known as the mineral mirabilite. This decahydrate form is widely used by the chemical industry. In 1990, Mexico and Spain were the main producers of natural sodium sulfate. Each of those countries produced around 500,000 tonnes that year. Russia, the United States, and Canada each produced about 350,000 tonnes.

You might see the effects of sodium sulfate in things you use every day. It helps make the clothes you wear by helping dyes soak into fabric evenly. In Japan, this is a very important use for the salt. It is also used in the food industry as a way to thin out food colors. This additive is known by the number E514. Even the glass in your windows might have been helped by this salt. It helps the glass stay clear by removing bubbles while it is hot.
