Magnesium sulfate

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Magnesium sulfate is a white, crystalline salt. It is made of magnesium and sulfate. This salt is very special because it can dissolve easily in water. It often appears as a hydrate. A hydrate is a solid that holds water inside its structure. The most common version is called Epsom salt.

This salt is very important for life on Earth. It helps plants grow by providing magnesium. Magnesium is a part of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what plants use to turn light into food through photosynthesis.

Without enough magnesium in the soil, plants might struggle to grow well.

There are many ways to make or find this salt. It can be found in nature in dry lake beds. It is also in seawater and some natural springs. You can make it by reacting magnesium carbonate with sulfuric acid. Another way is to treat seawater with acid to create it. Farmers often use a version called monohydrate in their fields. In the mid-1970s, people made 2.3 million tons of it every year. By 2024, that number grew to about 2.6 million tons.

Epsom salt has a very long history. It gets its name from a place called Epsom in England. This town has bitter, salty springs in the Surrey area. People have used these salts for a very long time. In the early to mid-20th century, veterinarians used it to help farm animals. They used it to treat animals that had eaten lead. Today, we use it in many different ways at home.

People use magnesium sulfate for many helpful things. Many people add it to bath water to soothe sore muscles. It is also used in isolation tanks to help people float. The salt makes the water very dense, which is a measure of how heavy the liquid is. This high density lets a person float easily on the surface. In the kitchen, it is used to make tofu. It is also used as a salt in brewing beer.

This salt is even found in outer space. The Dawn spacecraft saw bright spots on the dwarf planet Ceres. These spots look like magnesium sulfate hexahydrate. Scientists also think a type of this salt might be on Mars. It can be found on frozen lakes on Mars too. This shows that the same chemistry on Earth exists in far-off places. It is a truly universal substance.
