Magnesium sulfate

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Magnesium sulfate is a white salt. It can dissolve in water. It often comes in a form called a hydrate. A hydrate is a solid that holds water inside its parts. The most common type is Epsom salt.

Farmers use this salt in soil. It helps plants like roses and tomatoes grow. These plants need magnesium to make chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what helps plants use light to make food. Using this salt is helpful because it dissolves easily. It does not change the soil's pH level.

People use Epsom salt in many ways. You can add it to a warm bath. This can help soothe sore muscles or feet. Some people use it in tanks to help them float. The salt makes the water very dense. This high density lets a person float easily.

This salt is found in nature. It is in seawater and some springs. Scientists even found it on the dwarf planet Ceres. It may also be on the planet Mars.
