Tetrasodium EDTA is a useful white solid.

It is a type of salt. This salt comes from a chemical called ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It dissolves very easily in water.

Scientists call it a chelating agent. This means it can grab onto other things. It is a very important tool for many different jobs.

This substance works in a special way. It is made by a process called neutralization. This happens when ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid meets sodium hydroxide.

This process creates the salt we call tetrasodium EDTA. Some samples are hydrated, which means they hold water. These are written as Na4EDTA.4H2O. If you mix a 1% solution in water, the pH is about 11.3. This number shows it acts like a base. When it is in neutral water, it partially turns into H2EDTA2-.

People have known about this substance since at least 1954.

It is also known by the name Dissolvine E-39. It is a salt of edetic acid. Many companies use it in their work. One firm is Procter and Gamble. They hold 5% of the patents at the USPTO for this substance. This shows how much people use it.

This white solid helps clean many things. It is used in cosmetics and skin care. You might find it in hair care products too.

It can also remove rust from metals. It cleans scale from copper and brass. It even works on ferrous metal surfaces. Some engine coolant system flushes use a 6% mix. In those cleaners, it is the main active ingredient.

Think about how a magnet works. A magnet grabs onto metal pieces. A chelating agent like tetrasodium EDTA does something similar. It grabs onto other parts in a liquid. This helps keep products stable or cleans surfaces. It is used as a preservative in many items. It is also known as an E-number additive.

This makes it a common part of our world.
