Lead(II) chromate is a bright yellow salt. It is an inorganic compound with the formula PbCrO4.

This substance does not mix well with water. You can find it in nature as a mineral called crocoite. It is often used as a pigment. People call this specific color chrome yellow.

This yellow color is very bright and bold.

There are different ways this salt can form. It has two main shapes called polymorphs. One shape is called orthorhombic and looks greenish yellow. The other is called monoclinic and is more stable. This stable form is what people use for paint. There is also a red-orange form called tetragonal. The atoms in this salt connect in a special way. This way of connecting is called a monazite structure.

Scientists know how to make this salt in a lab. They can treat sodium chromate with lead salts. One example is using lead(II) nitrate. They can also combine lead(II) oxide with chromic acid. Some people make similar pigments by using sulfate. This creates a mixed lead-chromate-sulfate color. Because sulfate is colorless, these colors are not as intense. This is because sulfate and chromate have similar structures.

This yellow pigment has a long history of use. In the 1800s, it was used to color candy. In 1996, about 37,000 tons were produced. A famous artist named Vincent van Gogh used it. He used it for his painting called Sunflowers. Today, it is still used for road marking paint. It is very useful for making bright lines on streets.

We must be very careful with lead chromate. It can be dangerous if people breathe the dust. In the US, the CDC reported cases of lead toxicity. This happened in 2023 and 2024 with cinnamon. Some people added the salt to spice to change its color. This was illegal and made children sick. Many countries now have very strict rules for it.

We must treat these chemicals with great care.
