Sodium dichromate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sodium dichromate is a very important salt. It has a chemical formula of Na2Cr2O7. Most chromium in the world starts as this salt. People use it to make many different chromium materials. It is an inorganic compound. This means it does not come from living things. It is used in many big industries.

Making this salt is a large step-by-step process. First, workers take ore that has chromium(III) oxides. They mix the ore with a base like sodium carbonate. They heat this mix to about 1000 °C. They also add air to provide oxygen. This heat makes the chromium dissolve so it can be pulled out with hot water. Other parts like iron stay behind. Then, workers add sulfuric acid or carbon dioxide to the water. This creates the dichromate. Finally, the salt forms into crystals.

Many millions of kilograms are made every year. This salt can exist in different forms called hydrates. These forms have different amounts of water inside them. For example, the decahydrate forms below 19.5 °C. Other forms include hexa-, tetra-, and dihydrates. The salt is usually handled as a dihydrate. If the temperature goes above 62 °C, the salt loses its water. This leaves behind the anhydrous material.

This salt acts as an oxidizing agent. An oxidizing agent is a substance that causes changes in other things. It can change benzylic and allylic C-H bonds into carbonyl derivatives. It can also turn menthol into menthone. It is used to make leather through a process with sulfur dioxide. People also use it for hexavalent chrome plating. In that job, it is turned into chromic acid using sulfuric acid.

We must be very careful with sodium dichromate. It is a toxic substance. It is also corrosive and can cause severe eye damage. It is a carcinogen, which means it can cause cancer. It can also cause harm to unborn children or genetic damage. Because of this, factories must follow strict rules. They treat waste with reducing agents. This turns chromium(VI) back into chromium(III). This makes it less threatening to the environment.
