Chromates and dichromates are special parts of chromium.

They are called oxyanions because they contain oxygen and chromium. These substances are strong oxidizing agents. This means they can cause chemical changes in other things. They are very useful in science and industry. However, they must be handled with great care. Some forms can even be toxic to living things.

These two substances can change into each other. This way of working is called a chemical equilibrium. The way they change depends on the liquid around them. In alkaline solutions, the chromate ion is the main part. In acidic solutions, the dichromate ion becomes the main part.

If the liquid is very acidic, even bigger groups like trichromates can form. All these groups are made of small units that share corners.

We can find these materials in the ground. The main source is a mineral called chromite.

People heat chromite with calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate. They do this while adding air to the mix. This process turns the chromium into its hexavalent form. A beautiful mineral called crocoite has long red crystals.

You can also find rare minerals like lópezite in the Atacama Desert.

People use these salts for many important jobs. They use them in chrome plating to protect metals. This helps prevent rust and makes paint stick better. In 1985, people produced about 75,000 tonnes of hexavalent chromium.

Many of these were sodium dichromate. In the past, a pigment called chrome yellow was very common. It was used to paint things like school buses a bright color.

Even though they are useful, we must stay safe. Hexavalent chromium can be dangerous to human health. Breathing in tiny particles can cause lung cancer. It can also be linked to cancer of the nose. Because of this, there are many strict safety rules. For example, the EU uses the RoHS Directive to limit these chemicals. These rules help keep people and the planet safe.
