Potassium chromate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Potassium chromate is a bright yellow solid. It is an inorganic compound. This means it is not made by living things. Scientists often use it in a laboratory. It is known as an oxidizing agent. An oxidizing agent can cause changes in other substances. This chemical is a salt of the chromate anion.

There are two ways the crystals can form. Both forms look like potassium sulfate. The most common form is called orthorhombic. This form can change into an alpha-form. This change happens when it gets above 35 °C. Scientists also study how it reacts with other things. For example, it reacts with lead(II) nitrate. This makes an orange-yellow precipitate. A precipitate is a solid that forms in a liquid.

People make this substance in a few ways. One way is to treat potassium dichromate with potassium hydroxide. You can also use potassium carbonate to make it. Another way is to fuse potassium hydroxide with chromium trioxide. These steps create the yellow powder used in labs. It is different from sodium chromate. Sodium chromate is used more in big industries. Potassium chromate is better for lab work.

This chemical has many important uses in science. It helps scientists find silver ions. It is used in a test called the Mohr method. This method measures levels of chloride ions. A scientist uses silver nitrate to do this test. When the test is done, a red color appears. This happens because red silver chromate forms. This color change tells the scientist the test is finished.

We must handle potassium chromate with great care. It is a hexavalent chromium compound. This means it is highly soluble. It is also acutely toxic to living things. The substance is corrosive to the body. It can cause severe eye damage or even blindness. Studies show it can cause cancer in the lungs. It can also cause cancer in the nose or sinuses. It may also harm unborn children.
