Sylvite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sylvite is a natural mineral made of potassium chloride. It is a special kind of salt. You might know of rock salt called halite. Sylvite is very similar to halite in how it grows. These two minerals are isomorphous. This means they share a similar shape.

Sylvite can look colorless or white. Sometimes it has shades of yellow or red. These colors come from small bits inside it. It has a salty taste. It also has a distinct bitterness.

This mineral forms in a special way. It is an evaporite mineral. This means it forms when water dries up. It is one of the last parts to form from a salty liquid. Because of this, it only grows in very dry, salty areas.

The liquid must evaporate first. Then the mineral precipitates, or settles out, of the solution. This process leaves the mineral behind in dry places. It is a slow way for crystals to grow.

People first described this mineral in 1832. They found it at Mount Vesuvius near Napoli in Italy. The name comes from an old way of naming it. It was called sal degistivum Sylvii and sal febrifugum Sylvii. These names honor François Sylvius de le Boe. He was a Dutch physician and chemist. He lived from 1614 to 1672.

We find sylvite in many parts of the world. Huge beds exist in New Mexico and western Texas. You can also find it in Utah. The largest source in the world is in Saskatchewan, Canada. These huge deposits formed from a Devonian seaway. A seaway is a large body of water. This water dried up a long time ago. Sylvite is the official mineral of Saskatchewan.

Sylvite is very useful to humans. Its main use is as a potassium fertilizer. This helps plants grow better. It can also be used for science tools. It is used for spectroscopic prisms and lenses. These tools help scientists study light. Sylvite has a hardness of 2.5 on the Mohs scale. It also has a specific gravity of 1.99.
