Potassium chloride is a special kind of salt.

Sylvinite

It is made of two parts called potassium and chlorine. This salt has no smell at all. It looks like clear or white glass crystals. You can dissolve this salt easily in water. When it dissolves, the liquid tastes like salt. It is very useful for many different jobs.

Scientists and farmers use it every single day.

Many people use this salt to help plants grow. Most of it is made into a fertilizer called potash. Plants need potassium to stay healthy and strong. It helps them make proteins and use water well. It also helps with photosynthesis, which is how plants make food. To keep plants safe, farmers use a small amount. They might use 6 mM of the salt in water. This amount is safe and helps the plants grow well.

People have found this salt in nature for a long time. It can be found in ancient dried lake deposits. It appears in minerals like sylvite or sylvinite. Sylvinite is a rock that has both this salt and table salt. In the past, people called it sal degistivum Sylvii. In 2005, about 5% of it was used as a chemical feedstock. This means it was used to make other things like chlorine. Today, many large amounts come from places like Canada, Russia, and Belarus. Saskatchewan in Canada makes over 25% of the world's potash.

This salt is also very important for human health. The World Health Organization puts it on a list of essential medicines. Doctors use it to treat people with low blood potassium. It is even used in solutions to help people who are sick from diarrhea. However, too much potassium can be dangerous for the body. It can disrupt how cells send signals. This could even cause a heart to stop. Because of this, doctors must be very careful with how much is used.

You might see potassium chloride in your own home. Some people use it as a substitute for table salt. This helps them eat less sodium, which is found in regular salt. It can sometimes taste bitter or metallic. To fix this, people mix it with regular salt. Some brands of bottled water also use it. It is even used in some de-icing products for roads. These products are designed to be safer for pets and plants.
