Making this pigment is a specific way of working. It starts with a mineral called crocoite. This mineral is a natural form of lead chromate. To make the pigment, scientists mix lead salts with a source of chromate. This mixture creates a fine solid that settles out. This solid is the raw pigment. Makers often coat the pigment in clear oxides. This coating acts like a shield against the air. It protects the color from changing too fast.

A French chemist named Louis Nicolas Vauquelin found the secret to this color. He was studying the mineral crocoite in the early 1800s. During his work, he found a new element called chromium. This discovery allowed people to make many new pigments. The first known use of this color in a painting was by Sir Thomas Lawrence. This was before the year 1810. English speakers first called it "chrome yellow" in 1818.

Many famous people have used this bright color. The artist Vincent van Gogh used it in his famous Sunflowers series. He mixed many different shades of it to get the right look.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the color was very popular in fashion. People wore flapper dresses and hats in this bright shade. They often paired it with pink or turquoise. As of 2001, about 90,000 tons of chrome yellow were made every year.

However, this color can be tricky to keep bright. It can turn brown or even green over time. This happens when it reacts with things like sulfur or air. Because it contains lead and chromate, it is also not very safe. These parts can be toxic to living things. Many artists now use cadmium yellow instead. Some people even use newer organic pigments like arylides.
