When you look at light with a wavelength between 570 and 590 nanometers, your eyes see yellow. This color is used in many ways to create images. In color printing, yellow is a primary color alongside cyan and magenta. These inks mix together to print any full-color picture.

On computer screens, yellow works differently. It is a secondary color made by mixing red and green light.

In nature, yellow comes from special parts called carotenoids. These are organic pigments found in plants, algae, and even some bacteria. They do two important jobs for living things. First, they absorb light energy to help with photosynthesis. Second, they protect green chlorophyll from being damaged by the sun.

You can find these pigments in many foods. They give color to corn, lemons, bananas, and egg yolks. Even the pink color in flamingos comes from these pigments in their food.

Leaves change color in the autumn because of these pigments. As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, the leaf veins close. This stops water and minerals from moving into the leaf. The green chlorophyll begins to fade away slowly. As the green disappears, the yellow carotenoids become visible.

This process creates the beautiful yellow colors we see in the fall. Bananas also change from green to yellow as they ripen. This happens because enzymes change the fruit's texture and color.

They also used them in Roman villa murals. Later, the color had many different meanings in history. In China, bright yellow was for the emperor and his family.

Astronomer F. G. W. Struve began classifying stars by color in 1827. Some special stars, called Cepheid variables, help scientists measure distances in the galaxy. Even the North Star, Polaris, is an example of this. Yellow is a color that connects science, art, and the stars.
