Sodium peroxide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sodium peroxide is a special yellow solid. It is an inorganic compound with the formula Na2O2. This material is a strong base. It can also exist as a white substance. This happens when it forms a hydrate. A hydrate is a version that holds water. One example is the octahydrate. This specific version is easy to prepare.

Making this substance happens in two steps. First, people ignite sodium in extra oxygen. This turns the sodium into sodium oxide. Next, they treat that oxide with even more oxygen. This second step creates the sodium peroxide.

Another way involves using ozone gas. Scientists can pass ozone over solid sodium iodide. They do this inside a platinum or palladium tube. These metals help the reaction happen.

People discovered this substance a long time ago. Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Louis Jacques Thénard found it in 1810. Later, Hamilton Castner made it for work. He made it commercially in the 1890s. The substance has a unique shape. It forms crystals with hexagonal symmetry. If you heat it to 512 °C, the shape changes. This new shape has an unknown symmetry.

Sodium peroxide has many important uses. It can act as an oxidizing agent. This means it helps cause changes in other things. It was once used to bleach wood pulp. This helped make paper and textiles. Now, it is mostly used in labs. Scientists use it to pull minerals from ores. It also has commercial names like Solozone and Flocool.

One of its coolest jobs is making oxygen. It reacts with carbon dioxide to do this. This reaction creates oxygen and sodium carbonate. It can also make sodium bicarbonate. Because of this, it is useful for scuba gear. It is also helpful in submarines.

If you heat it to 657 °C, it decomposes. This means it breaks down into sodium oxide. During this break down, it releases oxygen gas.
