Barium peroxide

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Barium peroxide is a special kind of white solid. It might look gray if it is not pure. This substance belongs to a group called inorganic peroxides. It holds a very important place in science history. It was the first peroxide compound ever discovered. This material is an oxidizer, which helps things burn.

How does this substance work? It is made of barium cations and peroxide anions. These parts give it a specific shape. The solid is isomorphous to calcium carbide. This means its parts are arranged in a similar way. When it catches fire, it creates a bright green color. This bright color happens because of the barium inside it.

Scientists can make this solid through a reaction. They mix barium oxide with hydrogen peroxide. This is a reversible reaction, so it can go back and forth. During this process, the barium peroxide forms. At the same time, oxygen is released above the mix. This way of working was used in the Brin process. That process helped people get oxygen from the air.

In the past, people used this solid for other jobs. They used it to make hydrogen peroxide. They did this by reacting it with sulfuric acid. This reaction creates a solid called barium sulfate. Because barium sulfate does not dissolve, it is insoluble. Workers could then filter it out of the mixture. This method is now an obsolete application.

Barium peroxide is very useful for making fireworks. Its ability to act as an oxidizer is key. It helps the colors in the sky look vivid. You might see its green glow during a show. Other oxides like strontium oxide behave in a similar way. It is a fascinating part of the world of chemistry.
