Barium peroxide

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Barium peroxide is a white solid. It can look gray if it is not pure. It was the first peroxide compound ever found. This substance is an oxidizer. An oxidizer is a thing that helps things burn. This makes it good for fireworks. When it catches fire, it gives off a bright green color. This happens because of the barium inside it.

Scientists make this solid in a special way. They mix barium oxide with hydrogen peroxide. This makes a set of steps called a reaction. During this, barium peroxide forms. At the same time, oxygen is let out. This way was used to get oxygen from the air. This was called the Brin process. It is not used much now.

People also used it to make hydrogen peroxide. They did this by mixing it with sulfuric acid. This made a solid called barium sulfate. They could then filter that solid out of the mix. Barium peroxide has a structure like calcium carbide. This means its parts are shaped in a similar way.
