This acid is a powerful oxidizer when it is hot. An oxidizer is a substance that can cause a chemical change. Because of this, we must be very careful. It can react with metals or wood. It can even cause an explosion. One big accident happened in 1947 in Los Angeles. An explosion at a factory killed 17 people.

People use this acid for many big jobs. It helps make ammonium perchlorate. This is a part of rocket fuel. Because of rockets, we make millions of kilograms of it each year. It is also used to clean metals. It helps etch parts for screens. Scientists also use it to study rocks. It helps break down minerals for study.
