Perchlorate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Perchlorate is a special chemical. It is used for many jobs. Most people use it as an oxidizer. An oxidizer helps things burn very fast. This makes it great for rocket fuel. It also makes fireworks and flares work.

Perchlorate has other uses too. It can stop static electricity. This keeps food from sticking to its box. Some types help make oxygen. This is useful for people in submarines. It is also used in matches.

We can find perchlorate in nature. Lightning can make it in the air. It has been found in rain and snow. It is also in the soil on Mars. On Mars, it acts like antifreeze. This helps water stay liquid in the cold.

Some tiny living things can eat it. These are called microbes. They use a special tool called an enzyme. This enzyme helps them change perchlorate into other things. This process lets out oxygen.
