Hypochlorite is a special part of a chemical.

It is often found in salts. You might know it as sodium hypochlorite. This is the liquid bleach used at home. You might also see calcium hypochlorite. This is used in powder for swimming pools.

These salts work as cleaners. They are used for bleaching and disinfection. This means they kill germs and remove stains. They can even whiten clothes or lighten hair. A chemist named Claude Berthollet found these traits in 1785.

Our bodies use hypochlorite too. White blood cells make small amounts of it.

These cells fight germs like bacteria and viruses. The hypochlorite helps digest the germs. It can also make bacteria clump together so they die.

Most hypochlorite salts are not very stable. This means they can change easily. If you add acid, it lets out chlorine gas. This gas can be dangerous. If you heat them, they can even explode. This is why we often use them as liquids in water.
