It also kills germs to keep things clean. Many people use liquid bleach at home. This is often a mix called sodium hypochlorite.

Bleach works by changing colors. Colors come from tiny parts called pigments. Most bleaches are oxidizing agents. These are chemicals that can remove electrons from other molecules. This process breaks the parts that make color. The color then turns clear. Some bleaches are reducing agents. These work by a different way to change bonds.

Long ago, people used the sun to whiten cloth. They spread fabric in fields with water. This took a long time. In the late 1700s, scientists found chlorine. This made the work much faster. Today, we use many types of bleach. Some use oxygen, like hydrogen peroxide. Others use chlorine. Bleach can also clean swimming pools. It kills bacteria and algae. But be careful. Bleach is strong.
