physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Bleach is a chemical product used to remove color from fabrics or fibers. This task is known as bleaching. People also use it to disinfect surfaces after cleaning. Many people use a liquid version called sodium hypochlorite. This substance is very useful for many different jobs. It can clean things in our homes. It can also clean large swimming pools. It works by controlling bacteria, viruses, and algae in the water.

Bleach works by reacting with colored organic compounds. These compounds are often natural pigments. Most bleaches are oxidizing agents. This means they can remove electrons from other molecules. This action breaks the chemical bonds in a part called a chromophore. Once those bonds break, the substance becomes colorless. Some bleaches are reducing agents instead. They work by changing double bonds into single bonds. This also stops the substance from absorbing visible light.

In the past, bleaching took a very long time. People spread cloth out in fields to use sunlight and water. This was called a bleachfield. In the 17th century, workers in Western Europe used acid and alkaline baths. This whole process could last up to six months. Everything changed in the late 18th century with new discoveries. Scientists in Europe invented chlorine-based bleaches. These new products changed the work from months to just a few hours.

Many scientists helped develop what we use today. A German-Swedish chemist named Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered chlorine in 1774. In 1785, Claude Berthollet found it could bleach fabric. He also found sodium hypochlorite. This became the first commercial bleach. It was called "Javel water" after the Javel area near Paris. Later, Charles Tennant patented bleaching powder in 1799. In 1818, Louis Jacques Thénard produced hydrogen peroxide. This was first used for bleaching in 1882.

Bleach is a part of many things you see every day. It helps make the wood pulp used for paper white. It is used in some medicines to treat acne. Some people even use it to whiten their teeth or hair. You might see oxygen bleach used for clothes that need color protection. However, you must always be careful with these chemicals. Bleach can damage natural materials like leather or cloth. It can also be harmful to your skin, eyes, or if breathed in.
