Hypochlorite is a special part of a chemical called an oxyanion.

It has a chemical formula written as ClO−. You often find it in salts that people use every day. Sodium hypochlorite is the main part of household liquid bleach. Calcium hypochlorite is used in bleaching powder for swimming pools. These salts are very helpful for cleaning and protecting our world. They act as bleaching, disinfecting, and water treatment agents.

These chemicals work through a thing called oxidation. Oxidation is a way that one substance can change another. Hypochlorite is a very strong oxidizing agent. It can change things like manganese or primary alcohols. This power is why it works so well to remove stains. It can also kill germs by breaking them down. In a lab, it can even turn phenols into chlorophenols. This makes it a useful tool for many different jobs.

People discovered these useful traits a long time ago. A French chemist named Claude Berthollet found bleaching properties in 1785. Later, around 1820, another French chemist named Labarraque found they could disinfect. This was even before the famous scientist Pasteur explained how germs work. Since then, we have learned how to make them in big ways. We can make them by reacting chlorine with metal hydroxides. We can also use electricity to make sodium hypochlorite from brine.

Most hypochlorite salts are not very stable. This means they can change into something else quite easily. Many of them only stay as they are when mixed in water. If you heat them up, they can break down. This can release oxygen and chloride. In some cases, this heat can cause a dangerous explosion. Adding acid is also risky. It can turn the salt into chlorine gas, which is dangerous.

Your own body actually uses hypochlorite to stay healthy. When you get an infection, your white blood cells jump into action. These cells are called neutrophil granulocytes. They swallow up tiny viruses and bacteria. Inside the cell, they use a special reaction to make small amounts of hypochlorite. This helps to digest the germs. It can even make bacteria clump together so they die.
