Base anhydride

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A base anhydride is a special type of chemical powder. It comes from elements in group 1 or group 2. These groups include alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. This powder is very important in the study of chemistry. You can make it by removing water from a hydroxide. If you add water back, it turns back into a salt.

There is a specific way these powders work. They are known as Brønsted–Lowry bases. This means they are able to accept a proton. They are also called Lewis bases. A Lewis base will share an electron pair with certain acids. These acids are often called acidic oxides. This sharing helps the chemicals react together.

Scientists study these reactions to understand energy. One famous example is quicklime, which is calcium oxide. When quicklime meets water, it becomes hydrated lime. This new substance is called calcium hydroxide. This change is an exothermic reaction. This means the process gives off heat. The heat released is -63.7kJ per mole of calcium oxide.

These substances can be very strong and powerful. Quicklime is a strong base like lye. Sodium oxide is another example of a base anhydride. It is a very strong base too. It reacts with water to create sodium hydroxide. This specific reaction is irreversible. This means the change cannot be undone once it happens.

Because they are so strong, you must be careful. Base anhydrides are potent alkalis. They can cause alkali burns on your skin. This happens because the powder has a high affinity for water. It wants to react with water very badly. It will react with the water found in your body. This is why they are handled with great care.
