Weak base

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A weak base is a special type of substance. When you mix a weak base into water, it does not change completely. Most of the molecules stay exactly as they were. Only a tiny part of the base breaks apart into new pieces. These pieces include hydroxide ions and a basic radical. This process creates a liquid called an aqueous solution. This solution will have a pH higher than 7.0. Some bases can even have a pH greater than 14.

Bases work by acting as proton acceptors. This means they take a hydrogen ion from water. This act is called protonation. In a weak base, this does not happen very much. Because it does not take many protons, more hydrogen ions stay in the water. This results in a lower pH than a strong base. A strong base takes many more protons from the water. This leaves very few hydrogen ions behind. A strong base also has a much higher concentration of hydroxide ions.

Scientists use a special number to measure strength. This is called the base dissociation constant, or Kb. The Kb tells us how well a base breaks apart in water. A large Kb means the base is quite strong. A small Kb means the base is weak. We can also look at the percentage protonated. This is the percentage of base molecules that have taken a proton. A lower percentage means the base has a lower pH.

There are many different bases in the world. For example, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a very strong base. Diethylamine, written as (CH3CH2)2NH, is a bit weaker than that. Ammonia (NH3) is even weaker than diethylamine. Ammonia is a very common weak base. When ammonia meets water, it makes ammonium ions and hydroxide ions. We can even use math to study a base like pyridine. For a 0.20 M solution of pyridine, the Kb is 1.8 x 10−9.

Weak bases are important in living things too. They can build up in fluids that are acidic. For instance, stomach acid has more weak base than plasma. Weak bases also move through biological membranes. This happens when there is a gradient of hydrogen ions. In the body, acid urine excretes weak bases much faster than alkaline urine. Understanding these bases helps us see how liquids work inside us. It shows how small changes in molecules change the whole liquid.
