Hydrogen peroxide

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hydrogen peroxide is a very interesting chemical compound. In its purest form, it looks like a pale blue liquid.

However, most people see it as a clear liquid because it is usually mixed with water. This substance is highly reactive, which means it likes to change into other things. It can act as an oxidizer, a bleaching agent, or an antiseptic.

Because it is so active, it is used in many different ways in our world.

There is a specific way this liquid works. It contains a special bond between two oxygen atoms. This makes the molecule asymmetrical and highly polarized.

When it is exposed to light, it slowly breaks down into water and oxygen. If it touches certain organic compounds, it breaks down much faster. If it gets very hot, concentrated versions can decompose explosively.

This high energy is why it can be used as a fuel in rocketry.

Scientists have studied this molecule for a long time. In 1892, a chemist named Giacomo Carrara found its molecular mass. He did this by looking at how much it lowered the freezing point of water.

Later, in 1950, Paul-Antoine Giguère used a tool called infrared spectroscopy to show its shape. He found that the molecule is not flat, but instead has a twisted shape. This discovery helped people finally understand how the atoms are arranged.

Today, we make huge amounts of hydrogen peroxide using a method called the anthraquinone process. This process was developed in the 1930s by a company called IG Farben.

It works by using a special substance called anthraquinone to help oxygen react with hydrogen. In 1950, the world made 35,000 tonnes of it. By 1998, that number grew to 2.7 million tonnes.

Most of what we make today is kept at a concentration of 70% or less for safety.

You can find hydrogen peroxide in places you might not expect. It is found in the atmosphere and in groundwater.

It even exists in the ocean, with small amounts in sea water. Most importantly, it is found in biological systems, including the human body. Enzymes in our bodies help to manage it. These special tools are called peroxidases.

It is a small molecule, but it plays a big role in nature and science.
