Perchloric acid

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Perchloric acid is a very powerful liquid. It is a type of mineral acid. This acid is clear and looks like water. It is much stronger than other acids like sulfuric or nitric acid. Scientists call it a superacid because it is so strong.

It can even form a solid crystal called hydronium perchlorate. This acid is very useful for many big jobs. It helps make things like rocket fuel. Because of this, we make millions of kilograms of it every year.

There are a few ways to make this acid. One way is to use a salt called sodium perchlorate. This salt dissolves very well in water. Workers mix this salt with hydrochloric acid to get perchloric acid. This process leaves behind solid sodium chloride. Another way is to use electricity. This is called anodic oxidation. It happens at a platinum electrode. In a small lab, scientists use different methods. They might mix nitric acid with ammonium perchlorate and boil it.

People have been studying this acid for a long time. An Austrian chemist first made it in the mid-1810s. He made it along with potassium perchlorate. Later, a French pharmacist named Georges-Simon Serullas gave it its modern name. He also found a solid version of it. A scientist named Berzelius made a weak version using electricity. In the late 1800s, workers in Germany and Sweden began making it for business. They used the electricity method to make it for many people.

This acid is used in many important places. It is used to make ammonium perchlorate. This is a key part of rocket propellant. It is also used to etch liquid crystal displays. These are the screens on many electronics. It helps clean or etch metals like aluminum and molybdenum. Scientists also use it in geochemistry. It helps them break down rock samples for study. It can even help break down organic matter.

We must be very careful with perchloric acid. It is a strong oxidizer when it is hot. This means it can react quickly with other things. It can react with metals, wood, or even plastic. This can be very dangerous. In 1947, a big accident happened in Los Angeles. A factory bath of acid exploded. This event killed 17 people and injured 150 others. It also damaged many homes and buildings nearby.
