It is made by burning sodium in extra oxygen. Two men found it in 1810. Their names were Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Louis Jacques Thénard. Later, Hamilton Castner made it for work in the 1890s.

This substance can act as an oxidizing agent. This means it helps cause changes in other things. It is very useful for divers. It can be used in scuba gear and submarines. This happens because it can make oxygen. It does this by reacting with carbon dioxide.

In the past, people used it to bleach wood pulp. This helped make paper and cloth. Today, it is mostly used in labs. It helps scientists pull minerals from rocks.

Sodium peroxide can also hold water. We call these versions hydrates. One type is white. The plain version is yellow. If you heat it to 657 °C, it breaks down. It then lets out oxygen gas.
