Ethylenediamine is a clear liquid used in many ways. It has a strong smell like ammonia.

Scientists call it a building block for chemical synthesis. This means it helps create many other substances. In 1998, people produced about 500,000 tonnes of it. It is the first member of a group called polyethylene amines. This liquid is very important in the world of chemistry.

There are a few ways to make this liquid. In the EDC process, workers treat 1,2-dichloroethane with ammonia. This happens under pressure at 180 °C in a liquid medium.

This reaction creates hydrogen chloride. A substance called sodium hydroxide is added to free the amine. Then, it can be recovered using fractional distillation. Another way uses ethanolamine and ammonia over nickel catalysts.

Many useful things come from ethylenediamine. It is a key part of a chelating agent called EDTA. This agent can grab onto metal ions. It is also used to make medicines. Some antihistamines, which help with allergies, come from it. One such drug is called piperoxan. It was discovered in 1933 at the Pasteur Institute in France.

This liquid works well in making many materials. It is used to produce polyurethane fibers. It also helps make plasticizers from formaldehyde. You might find it in fabric softeners or dyes. Some versions help protect metal from rust in paints. It even helps make color photography chemicals. In the past, it was used at Picatinny Arsenal during World War II. It helped make a mixture called PLX.

In science labs, ethylenediamine is a famous ligand. A ligand is a molecule that attaches to a metal atom.

It is often called "en" by chemists. It has two nitrogen atoms that can donate electrons. This makes it a bidentate ligand, which means it can grab with two hands. It is also used to help dissolve proteins. This makes it useful in many different industrial jobs.
