An aldol condensation is a special way to build molecules.

In organic chemistry, it is a way to make new carbon-carbon bonds. These bonds act like links in a chain to build bigger structures. This process uses two parts called carbonyl moieties. These parts come from molecules known as aldehydes or ketones. Scientists use this to create many important things. It is used to make medicines and many naturally occurring molecules.

The reaction works in two main steps. First, the two parts join together in an aldol reaction. This step makes a new structural unit called an aldol. The name comes from combining the words aldehyde and alcohol. Second, a thing called dehydration happens. This means a small molecule, like water, is removed from the structure. This removal turns the aldol into something called an enone.

There are two ways to start this reaction. One way uses a strong base to help. Bases like potassium hydroxide or sodium hydride can pull parts away. This is called base-catalyzed aldol condensation. The other way uses an acid to help. This is called acid-catalyzed aldol condensation. In the acid version, water helps turn the molecules into an enol. This enol then attacks the other molecule to finish the job.

This science is used in many big ways. For example, the Aldox process uses it to make 2-ethylhexanol. This process was developed by Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon. It uses propene and syngas to start the work. Another example is making pentaerythritol on a large scale. This starts with a crossed aldol condensation. It uses acetaldehyde and three parts of formaldehyde to create pentaerythrose.

You can think of this like building with blocks. One block must be ready to snap onto another. In a crossed aldol condensation, the two blocks are different. This can be hard because the blocks might try to snap to themselves. Scientists avoid this by using a ketone as the nucleophile. A nucleophile is a part that attacks another part to form a bond. This helps ensure the right pieces stick together in the right way.
