An aldol condensation is a way to build new molecules.

Simple aldol reaction
Simple aldol reaction

It works by joining two parts together. These parts are called aldehydes or ketones. This process helps make carbon-carbon bonds. These bonds are like links in a chain. This is very important for making medicine and natural things.

Base-catalysed aldol condensation
Base-catalysed aldol condensation

The reaction happens in two main steps. First, the two parts join. This first step is called an aldol reaction. It makes a new piece called an aldol. The second step is called dehydration. This is a way to remove a water molecule. After the water leaves, the molecule changes shape. It becomes something called an enone.

Scientists can start this reaction in two ways. They can use a base to help. A base is a type of chemical that can pull parts away. They can also use an acid to help. Both ways lead to the same kind of result.

This method is used in big factories to make useful items.
