One-pot synthesis

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chemists often need to make new things. They use a smart way called one-pot synthesis. This means they use just one reactor. They do not stop to clean up in between. They do not separate the middle parts. This saves a lot of time. It also saves many resources. This way can make complex things like medicine.

One way is called telescoping synthesis. In this way, chemists add things one at a time. They do not do a work-up. A work-up is a way to clean a mixture. One example makes a thing called 7-Hydroxyquinoline. This takes four steps in one pot. First, a blue part is added. This is a Michael reaction. Next, ethanol is added. It changes a part of the molecule. Then, acid is added to change it back. After that, a ring closes. This is a Friedel-Crafts reaction. Finally, potassium hydroxide lets out an alcohol group. Then, the mix is made neutral. This is called pH 7. This last step lets out a tosyl group.
