physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists can build tiny molecules from scratch. This is called organic synthesis. They use atoms like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. These atoms link together to make new things.

There are two main ways to build these. In a linear way, they do steps one by one. Each step makes a new part called an intermediate. For big molecules, they use a convergent way. They make several parts first. Then they join them all together.

Sometimes, scientists need heat to make things move fast. They use a reflux condenser to help. This is a special piece of glass. It cools down steam so it drips back down. This keeps the liquid in the flask.

After the reaction, they must clean the product. They use liquid-liquid extraction to separate liquids. This works because some liquids like to stay together. They also use filtration to catch solids. They can use gravity or a vacuum to pull liquid through paper.

This work is very useful. It helps make medicines like Ibuprofen. It even helps make cancer drugs.
