Organic reaction

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Organic reactions are ways that organic compounds change. These changes help us make many things. We use them to make drugs and plastics. They also help make food and cloth.

Scientists use these steps to build new molecules. Some reactions are very old. One example is burning fuel. Another is making soap from fats. Modern study began in 1828.

There are many types of reactions. Some move parts from one place to another. This is called a substitution reaction. Others move parts in a circle. We call these pericyclic reactions.

In pericyclic reactions, bonds move in a cycle. They do not have a single start or end point. Most reactions are polar reactions. In these, electron pairs move from one spot to another. This movement changes the charge of the atoms.

Many reactions have special names. They are often named after the person who found them. There are about 1,000 named reactions. Some names are very long. Scientists use short codes for those. This helps them work faster.
